Lost World Caverns – Lewisburg, West Virginia

Caving is something that is a delight for many people, to see what is under the surface of the land, to come upon beautiful stalactites and stalagmites that will have you wondering how a drop of water can create such beauty.  The Lost World Caverns gives you the opportunity to descent 120 fee below the surface.  They were discovered in 1942.

The tour will last approximately 45 minutes.  You can take the self-guided tour which allows you to spend longer if you want.  Just stay on the pathways and look at the guide sheet that has been provided to tell you about the different formations that are in this 1/2 mile loop.  Remember that when you are caving it is not warm, this cave stays at 52 degrees so you are going to want to bring a jacket or sweater to keep the chill off.

You will see such formations as the Snowy Chandelier which is a 30 ton compound stalactite, presumed to be one of the nations largest.  The Bridal Veil is comprised of beautiful sparkling white calcite.  Then you will see the War Club which is a 28 foot stalagmite made famous when Bob Addis sat on it for nearly 16 days, he wanted to get his name in the Guinness Book of World Records.  There are many more fascinating and beautiful formations for you to see so bring your camera along.

When you are done with the cave come into the museum and see the dinosaur’s and learn about the Tyranosaurus Rex, Triceratops and more.  In 1967 the remains of a prehistoric cave bear (Arctodus Pristinus) was unearthed in the cave.  Bet you haven’t seen one of those before!

Also,if you’re looking for something more adventurous, check out the Wild Cave Tour. A 4-hour guided tour will take you into the deepest, darkest depths of the cave. Go where few have gone before. Crawl, climb, get muddy, have fun. They will provide the gear and take photos so everyone in your group will have a set of their own. Just call a few days in advance to make your reservation.
