This museum is dedicated to the history of the African-American life of the days of the Underground Railroad and the challenges they faced for freedom.  There are artifacts of Thomas Friend who curtailed a successful wine business and used his cellars to hide escaping slaves.

Many of the workers in the coal mines were African -Americans, comprising 1/4 of the coal miners in the southern counties.

There is also information concerning the slaves who joined John Brown’s insurrection in Harpers Ferry.  In the year 1867 Storer College accepted freed slaves as students.  This is a college that Grederick Douglas was a college trustee.

The museum contains artifacts of educator Booker T. Washington and Carter G. Woodson.  Nearby, Talcot is home to the Big Bend Tunnel where legendary steel-drivin man John Henry helpd to building tunnel through a mile of rock.  There is a statue of him commemorating this great feat.
