Discover Natural and Historic Attractions at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

The historic town of Harpers Ferry in Jefferson County, West Virginia features a wide variety of attractions.  Harpers Ferry is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, and three states intersect here:  Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Many historic events are commemorated at Harpers Ferry. In addition, it is an incredibly scenic and vibrant natural area. 

History buffs will find the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park intriguing. There are several different historic areas to explore within the Park and several museums and historic sites.  Some of the museums at Harpers Ferry include the John Brown Wax Museum, the Black Voices Museum, a Natural History Museum, and a Civil War Museum.   

Living history programs, demonstrations and guided Park tours are available at Harpers Ferry throughout the year.  The Visitors Center on Cavalier Heights located several miles out of town provides shuttle bus services to Harpers Ferry so visitors may avoid the hassles of non-existent parking in the town.  The Lower Town Information Center features exhibits and information on touring Harpers Ferry, as well.

Throughout the town of Harpers Ferry, visitors can enjoy shopping and dining at a variety of restaurants.  The Harpers Ferry Historical Association Bookshop is an outstanding resource for books related to the history of Harpers Ferry.  

Harpers Ferry National Historic Park is located on the Appalachian Trail.  It is an ideal place to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities.  You can take a whitewater rafting or float ride on the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, or relax and enjoy fishing.  You can hike mountain trails to see breathtaking views of the valley, go biking or learn to rock climb at Harpers Ferry.    

Harpers Ferry is also a terrific place to enjoy a picnic and some casual birding and wildlife viewing.  There are many different habitats within Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, and you can see a tremendous variety of birds.  Over 170 species have been spotted at Harpers Ferry, including blue Herons, and seasonally, the bald eagle.
